Parliament, through an act, created All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1956 as an autonomous institution of national importance to develop patterns of teaching in Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Medical Education in all its branches and for nurturing excellence in all aspect of health care. Besides patient-care, Institute is also engaged in teaching and research. It conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees. AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing and trains students for B.Sc.(Hons.) Nursing degrees.It conducts teaching and research in 42 disciplines, runs 25 clinical departments including four super specialty centers and manages a 60-beded hospital in the Comprehensive Rural Health Center at Ballabgarh in Haryana.
Maulana Azad Medical College was established during the year 1959 in the capital city Delhi and named after educationist Maulana Azad. The college shares the capus with three of its major associated hospitals namely Lok Nayak Hospital and GB Pant Hospital and the Guru Nanak Eye Center. Besides extending health care facilities to rural population of Delhi (>30,000 people) through the associated hospitals, MAMC pursues objectives of medical education, strengthens research activities and provides routine and specialized investigating facilities.
